However, the study indicated a trade-off; Grodsky’s team found that floating solar panels could increase planet-warming gas emissions by nearly 27% in smaller ponds.

Lead author Adam Gallaher emphasized that the research provides a valuable framework for policymakers and stakeholders to adopt a data-driven approach in addressing multiple environmental challenges. Floating solar technology could also alleviate the financial burden on towns and energy providers, as it allows for reduced land and equipment costs, ultimately freeing up resources for local needs.
