SkyWind Achieves Certification for Innovative Micro Wind Turbine

German manufacturer SkyWind has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the first company to receive full certification for its micro wind turbine, the NG. This compact turbine, designed for easy rooftop installation, aims to supplement grid power with clean energy. While large wind turbines dominate media attention, SkyWind’s NG turbine, introduced in 2009, is notable for its user-friendly design. With over 10,000 units sold, the certified turbine produces 615 kWh per year, making it an attractive option for homes and outbuildings, especially in conjunction with solar power.

SkyWind has recently reached an important milestone in its evolution by becoming the first company globally to receive full certification from the ICC Small Wind Certification Council for its micro turbine. The certification tests were conducted in Utah, requiring a two-year verification process to confirm the turbine’s power output, safety, functionality, and long-term durability. The certified turbines each have a reported power output of 615 kWh per year. Although this accounts for only about 6% of the average American household’s annual electricity use of 10,791 kWh, multiple units can be installed to boost green energy generation. One turbine can also be dedicated to specific applications, such as illuminating an outbuilding or garage.

SkyWind highlights that their turbines excel in windy conditions, particularly during storms when solar panels may struggle, suggesting a complementary use of both technologies for renewable energy solutions. The NG turbines are approximately the size of a rooftop satellite dish, measuring 1.5 meters (4.92 feet) in diameter, allowing for easy installation of multiple units. They operate quietly and are equipped with onboard computers to assess environmental conditions, along with automatic braking and storm shutdown features. Currently, the turbines retail for €2,949 each (roughly US$3,450).

“Achieving SWCC certification is a significant step for SkyWind,” remarked Fritz Unger, the company’s CEO. “It reinforces our commitment to rigorous testing and international quality standards, ensuring our customers can trust in the performance and longevity of our turbines.”
