Monkey Blamed for Nationwide Power Outage in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s recent nationwide power outage was reportedly caused by a monkey that came into contact with a transformer at the Panadura Power Station. Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody confirmed that the incident, which occurred on Sunday at 11:00 AM local time, led to widespread electricity disruption, impacting critical infrastructure such as hospitals and water treatment facilities.

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) issued an apology and explained the cause of the blackout, while experts criticized the country’s aging energy infrastructure. Many noted that years of neglect have left the system vulnerable to failures, emphasizing the urgent need for modernization.

During Sri Lanka’s 2022 economic crisis, frequent power outages were common due to fuel shortages and reliance on energy imports. Engineers and energy experts warn that the national grid remains highly fragile, with single-point failures capable of triggering large-scale disruptions.

A senior energy official told the Daily Mirror, “Authorities have long been warned about the need to upgrade the energy infrastructure. However, successive governments have failed to take sufficient action. Even a minor fault can now result in major outages.”

In response to growing concerns, officials have pledged to strengthen Sri Lanka’s energy infrastructure to prevent future incidents. The outage has sparked public debate on the necessity of increased investment in energy security.
