Solar Team Eindhoven, a student group from Eindhoven University of Technology, has partnered with AIKO to develop Stella Juva, the world’s first solar-powered ambulance. Utilizing high-efficiency ABC (All Back Contact) solar cells, the vehicle is designed to operate entirely on renewable energy, powering both its propulsion and critical onboard medical equipment. Scheduled for a July 2026 debut, this innovative project aims to provide essential healthcare services in remote regions with limited infrastructure, demonstrating the practical application of solar technology in life-saving mobile energy systems.
The collaboration between AIKO and Solar Team Eindhoven marks a significant milestone in the convergence of sustainable mobility and healthcare. By integrating advanced ABC solar cells into the Stella Juva ambulance, the team seeks to redefine how emergency services are delivered in challenging environments. Unlike traditional solar applications, these cells are designed to maximize light absorption through a back-contact architecture that eliminates front-side metallization, ensuring the vehicle remains functional even under varying weather conditions.
David Komdeur, a Photovoltaics Engineer at Solar Team Eindhoven, emphasized that the choice of AIKO’s technology was driven by its industry-leading efficiency and reliability. The silver-free metallization used in the ABC cells significantly reduces the risk of microcracks, enhancing the long-term durability of the solar module. Furthermore, the cells maintain stable performance across diverse climates due to a low temperature coefficient and high resistance to degradation, which is vital for a vehicle tasked with life-saving missions.
Stella Juva is designed to be more than just a transport solution; it functions as a mobile power plant. The energy captured by the solar panels is sufficient to run sophisticated medical devices, making it an invaluable asset for regions where the power grid is unreliable or non-existent. This project follows a series of successful innovations by Solar Team Eindhoven, including the Stella Vita solar camper and the Stella Terra off-road vehicle. The team has a prestigious history in the field, having secured four consecutive victories in the World Solar Challenge Cruiser Class.
For AIKO, this partnership represents a strategic move toward real-world applications of zero-carbon mobility. By applying high-efficiency photovoltaic technology to emergency vehicles, the company is exploring how solar energy can serve critical societal needs beyond traditional residential or commercial installations. The Stella Juva is expected to hit the road in July 2026, setting a new standard for sustainable, independent medical transport.
