Australia’s Rooftop Solar Hits 26.8GW by Mid-2025

Australia’s installed rooftop solar capacity reached 26.8GW by the end of the first half of 2025, according to the Clean Energy Council’s bi-annual Rooftop Solar and Storage Report. The report highlights that Australia is on track to surpass its 2030 rooftop solar target of 36GW, with projections indicating an installed capacity of 37.2GW by June 2030. Although the installation rate slowed slightly between January and June 2025, the demand for home battery systems surged, indicating a growing trend in energy storage.

During the first half of 2025, rooftop solar contributed 12.8% of Australia’s electricity generation. The total rooftop solar installed during this period was 1.1GW, reflecting a 15% decrease from 1.3GW in the same timeframe in 2024. Despite this decline in installation pace, the numbers for H1 2025 align closely with the capacity from large-scale solar projects, which saw 1GW commissioned during the same period. Conversely, home batteries gained momentum, with sales totaling 85,000 units in H1 2025—a remarkable 191% increase from the prior year. Cumulatively, the number of installed batteries has doubled over the year to reach 271,000 across Australia.

The CIC indicated that households installing rooftop solar systems could save around AU$1,500 (US$999) annually on energy bills, with potential savings nearly doubling with the addition of a battery. Con Hristodoulidis, General Manager – Distributed Energy at CIC, noted the ongoing recognition of solar energy’s value in reducing costs, while also observing a significant rise in battery adoption that allows families to store clean energy for enhanced savings.

Another encouraging trend highlighted is the rise in the average system size, which now stands at a six-month rolling average of 10.2kW per installation, a 4.1% increase compared to the same period last year. In regional breakdowns, Queensland led in rooftop solar additions with 326MW installed, followed closely by New South Wales with 321MW and Victoria with 230MW. However, the cumulative installed capacity reveals a slightly different ranking: New South Wales remains at the forefront with 7.5GW of rooftop solar, followed by Queensland at 7.2GW, and Victoria with 5.4GW.
