Freen Launches Innovative Sodium-Ion Battery Storage Solutions

Freen OÜ has launched its latest generation of sodium-ion battery storage systems, the Freen-BSH and Freen-BSL models, developed in Estonia. These scalable batteries cater to homeowners, farmers, and commercial users, providing off-grid power and a way to integrate with solar energy. While Freen’s lithium-ion systems are priced at €230/kWh, the sodium-ion versions begin at €330/kWh. They are positioned to offer reliable power storage with extended service life and are not subject to transport restrictions that affect lithium-based batteries.

The high-voltage BSH model has a capacity of 10.08 kWh per module, operating at a nominal 575 V and a voltage range of 385 V to 760 V. It allows for a maximum discharge current of 8.75 A and can connect up to 10 modules in parallel, resulting in a total capacity of 100.8 kWh. These modules measure 95.2 cm by 10.8 cm by 74.5 cm and weigh 123 kg. With a service life exceeding 5,000 cycles at 80% depth of discharge, they can operate within temperatures ranging from -10 °C to 35 °C, and can discharge at temperatures as low as -40 °C up to 60 °C. Additionally, they have an IP65 rating, ensuring durability and protection from dust and water.

Delivered cabinet-ready, the systems come with integrated casters for easy installation. The low-voltage BSL model features a capacity of 7.5 kWh, with the ability to connect up to six modules in parallel for a maximum of 45 kWh. It operates between 40 V and 60 V with a nominal voltage of 48 V, and supports a maximum discharge current of 100 A, remaining identical to the BSH in all other respects.

Significantly, Freen’s sodium-ion systems, unlike lithium-based batteries, are not subject to international transport restrictions and do not require cobalt. A company spokesperson mentioned that these batteries can be ordered from Germany and shipped directly from their factory in Estonia. Although the product rollout is targeted across Europe, initial focus is on Germany. The spokesperson stated that Freen is currently identifying local sales partners and gathering inquiries to assess regional demand and deployment priorities.
