Amazon has strengthened its collaboration with global energy provider Iberdrola by signing an agreement to purchase 476 megawatts of wind and solar energy in Spain and Portugal. This deal supports Amazon’s growing energy needs, particularly for its upcoming data centers in the region, and aligns with the company’s commitment to sustainability.
One of the key projects under this agreement is the Tâmega wind farm in Portugal, which is being developed alongside a massive hydroelectric dam. Once completed, it will become the country’s largest wind farm, capable of supplying electricity to approximately 128,000 households annually. Iberdrola has committed a €350 million investment in the project.
This partnership follows Amazon’s previous announcement of a $17 billion investment over the next 10 years to enhance its infrastructure in Spain. With rising demand for AI and cloud services, the company is expanding its renewable energy initiatives to power its operations sustainably.
Moreover, Iberdrola named AWS as its primary cloud provider in 2024, utilizing AI-powered solutions to enhance grid connectivity, optimize wind farm design, and improve weather forecasting simulations. This collaboration underscores the growing intersection of renewable energy and cutting-edge cloud technology in the pursuit of a more sustainable future.
