Clean Energy to Dominate U.S. Power Plant Construction in 2025

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the country is set to add a record 63 GW of new power plant capacity in 2025—93% of which will come from carbon-free sources. This surge in clean energy comes amid growing electricity demand driven by AI data centers and domestic manufacturing.

Utility-scale solar will lead the way, accounting for over half of the new capacity, followed by battery storage at 29%, marking a significant rise in battery deployment. Wind energy will contribute 12%, supported by major offshore projects like Vineyard Wind 1 and Revolution Wind.

Natural gas, while still dominant in overall generation, will represent just 7% of new capacity and is expected to see a 3% drop in generation this year. In contrast, solar output is forecast to increase by more than 30%.

This trend highlights the U.S.’s transition toward cleaner, more cost-effective energy sources, positioning solar and storage as key solutions to power the nation’s increasingly digital and electrified economy.
