Niu Technologies, a company renowned for its electric two-wheelers, has officially entered the four-wheel market by unveiling the MM electric micro-car. Presented at the EICMA exhibition in Milan, the compact two-seater is designed for urban mobility, particularly within European cities. Its standout feature is a powertrain that utilizes the same removable NQiX battery packs found in the company’s flagship e-scooters. This swappable system offers the convenience of indoor charging and the ability to extend the vehicle’s driving distance, marking a practical approach to city commuting.
Engineered to meet the L6e European vehicle classification for light quadricycles, the Niu MM is tailored for navigating congested urban environments. Its 10-kW peak motor restricts the top speed to 45 kilometers per hour (28 mph), prioritizing safety and regulatory compliance over high performance. The vehicle’s compact dimensions and tight turning radius make it ideal for maneuvering through traffic and securing parking in tight spaces.
The standard configuration includes two NQiX battery packs, providing a range of approximately 70 kilometers (43 miles) on a single charge. A key innovation is the vehicle’s battery compartment, which can accommodate two additional packs, effectively doubling the potential range for longer trips without needing to find a charging station. This flexibility, combined with the ability to remove each battery for charging at home or in the office, addresses a common challenge for electric vehicle owners in urban settings.
The Niu MM features a practical design with a short hood for enhanced visibility, a single windshield wiper, and LED headlights. For storage, it offers a 26-liter compartment in the front trunk. The vehicle rides on 30.5-centimeter (12-inch) wheels. Inside, the driver is presented with a 12.7-centimeter (5-inch) color dashboard displaying essential information such as speed, battery level, and drive mode. While it forgoes a large infotainment screen, the cockpit is equipped with a phone holder and USB charging ports. The car can also connect to a companion mobile app for features like real-time GPS tracking and anti-theft alerts. Optional upgrades include air conditioning and a sunroof.
While the EICMA debut signals a strong focus on the European market, Niu has not yet announced an official release date or final pricing. Earlier reports based on a prototype suggested a target price of around €8,000, but the company has yet to confirm these details. There has been no information regarding potential availability in other international markets.
