SolarEdge Powers 1MW Solar Plant at French Methane Farm

Pioneering Safety and Sustainability
A 1MW solar plant at SCEA Robin, a methane production farm in Lyon, France, marks a milestone in sustainable energy integration. Leveraging SolarEdge’s advanced DC-optimized inverter technology, the farm has successfully combined solar energy with methane production, overcoming significant safety challenges.

Revolutionizing Energy Savings
The installation spans 8,000 square meters of rooftop space, producing solar energy that offsets high energy costs and creates a new revenue stream for the farm. Approximately 25% of the generated energy is consumed on-site, while surplus power is sold to the grid. This dual-use model has enabled SCEA Robin to save 18% annually on energy costs.

Navigating Safety Challenges
Proximity to methane production presented safety risks requiring stringent approval from local firefighters and insurers. SolarEdge’s Power Optimizers and SafeDC™ technology were pivotal in securing approvals. The SafeDC™ feature powers down the solar array to a touch-safe voltage during emergencies, enabling rapid intervention. This capability reassured stakeholders, including Christine Brouillet, methanization operator at SCEA Robin.

“Solar is now a key part of our business, helping reduce costs and generate additional revenue,” said Brouillet. “SolarEdge’s advanced safety features provide peace of mind for long-term investment.”

Innovation in Fire Safety
SolarEdge’s technology includes integrated arc fault protection, detecting and interrupting potential fire risks. Although not mandated by French regulations, these features align with insurer Groupama’s high safety standards.

“As solar adoption grows, safety innovations like SolarEdge’s Power Optimizers are critical,” said Gilles Bonnet, Prevention Engineer at Groupama. “Technological advances in risk management enhance safety and reliability.”

Remote Monitoring Boosts Efficiency
The local solar installer, Planète+, benefits from SolarEdge’s remote monitoring system, which enables panel-level diagnostics. This feature reduces downtime and minimizes maintenance costs.

“Safety is non-negotiable,” said Kamel Messai, Co-Director of Planète+. “SolarEdge’s SenseConnect and SafeDC technologies set an industry benchmark, ensuring safety and reliability.”

Sustainability and Scalability
The 1MW system not only advances SCEA Robin’s sustainability goals but also highlights the scalability of solar-methane integration. SolarEdge’s DC-optimized solutions exemplify how innovation can overcome challenges in complex environments.

As industries increasingly adopt renewable energy, projects like this illustrate the critical role of advanced technology in ensuring safety, sustainability, and economic viability. SCEA Robin’s success paves the way for similar installations globally, underscoring the transformative potential of smart energy systems in agriculture.
