France Launches First Floating Wind Farm, Provence Grand Large

France has made a significant advancement in offshore renewable energy with the launch of its first floating wind farm, Provence Grand Large. Situated 17 kilometers from the coast near Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône, this innovative project employs floating foundations, allowing it to harness stronger winds in deeper waters. It represents a notable milestone in offshore energy generation, combining the expertise of various sectors to deliver clean electricity to the national grid.

Provence Grand Large is equipped with three Siemens Gamesa wind turbines, each towering at 190 meters with blades extending 81 meters. The initiative required unique infrastructure, specifically a port capable of handling the substantial size and weight involved. Fos-sur-Mer, with its expansive dock and specialized equipment, became the assembly site for the turbines before they were transported offshore. Local teams were hired and trained to construct and maintain this cutting-edge technology, which aims to bridge skills gaps in the green energy sector.

The floating wind farm utilizes tension leg platforms, designed to remain stable even in harsh weather, reducing potential environmental disruption. Transporting the turbines involved meticulous planning, with a specialized barge moving each turbine to its designated location, ensuring minimal ecological disturbance by bypassing the need for traditional seabed drilling.

Collaboration was key throughout this project, combining talents from diverse fields, including oil and gas, shipbuilding, and electrical engineering. Staff faced various challenges, from tight schedules to unpredictable weather, but a unified goal kept morale high: contributing to France’s climate and energy objectives. The farm currently generates over 25 megawatts of electricity, symbolizing a major breakthrough for floating wind technology and setting the stage for larger initiatives.
