Seatrium and Karpowership to Convert Five Whale Class Floating Power Plants
The collaboration focuses on integrating hydrogen-capable multi-fuel systems into the largest floating power station model developed by Karpowership.
Seatrium Limited and Karpowership have entered into an agreement to convert and integrate five Whale Class floating power plants. These vessels, which represent the largest model in the Karpowership fleet, are designed with multi-fuel systems that support the use of hydrogen. Each unit is capable of generating up to 600 MW of electricity and features integrated substations for direct connection to national power grids.
The floating power stations are designed for rapid deployment, with a plug-and-play configuration that allows a ship to begin supplying electricity to a local grid within 30 days. The vessels are engineered to maintain a steady fuel supply while occupying a smaller physical footprint. According to Gokhan Kocak, Chief Technical Operations Officer at Karpowership, the Whale Class vessels reflect the company's focus on innovation and energy security.
Seatrium is responsible for the conversion process, which includes equipment installation and mechanical work. The first ship is scheduled to arrive at the company’s Tuas Boulevard Yard in December 2027. This project builds upon a partnership between the two companies that was established in 2018, with the goal of expanding floating energy solutions to address electricity demand in Singapore and other global markets.
Alvin Gan, Executive Vice President of Repairs and Upgrades at Seatrium, noted that the project represents the company's first major conversion and integration of the Whale Class fleet. He stated that the initiative leverages Seatrium's expertise in offshore engineering and complex vessel integration to support the development of floating power solutions intended to improve energy resilience.
