French automaker Citroën has unveiled the ELO concept, an electric vehicle designed as a highly versatile platform for remote work and outdoor adventures. The vehicle functions as a car, mobile office, and a fully equipped campsite, featuring a modular interior with integrated inflatable beds, a built-in projector, and adaptable power solutions. While officially a “mobility study,” the ELO’s emphasis on practical, real-world functionality over futuristic aesthetics presents a compelling vision for compact utility vehicles tailored to a nomadic lifestyle where travel, work, and leisure converge.
The ELO’s exterior design prioritizes function, resulting in a boxy, van-like silhouette that maximizes interior space. Its minimalist front end features vertical LED strips, while large glass surfaces, including an expansive windscreen and a sliding panoramic roof, create an open, airy feel. For simplified manufacturing and repair, the front and rear bumpers are identical. Practical details are integrated throughout, from wide-opening doors without a central pillar for easy access to flat platforms above the wheel arches for stowing small items when parked. The distinctive honeycomb wheel covers incorporate the brand’s logo while offering protection.
Inside, the driver is positioned centrally for an unobstructed, commanding view of the road. Citroën has eliminated the traditional dashboard, instead projecting all essential information onto a transparent strip at the base of the windscreen. Controls are managed via two joysticks mounted on a single-spoke steering wheel, creating a clean and intuitive user interface. The driver’s seat can also swivel 180 degrees to face the rear passengers, transforming the cabin into a collaborative workspace or social area.
Modularity is central to the ELO’s design. The second row contains three identical seats that can be folded flat or removed entirely to be used as camp chairs. Two additional seats are stowed discreetly, allowing the vehicle to transport up to six people. A work table folds out from the second row, and the projection system can be used for video calls. The interior is constructed from durable and sustainable materials, including lightweight expanded polypropylene and felt made from recycled fabric scraps, with water-resistant seat covers to withstand the rigors of outdoor use.
The vehicle’s camping and utility features are seamlessly integrated. Two inflatable mattresses, which deploy using an onboard compressed air system, transform the rear into a comfortable sleeping area for two. A Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) system provides power for external electronics and cooking equipment. The built-in compressor can also be used to inflate bicycle tires or paddleboards. Furthermore, a large awning can be attached to hooks on the doors, creating a sheltered outdoor living space, effectively allowing users to establish a basecamp with minimal extra gear.
